    Weather stations

Well Stanislaw, There's a tremendous amount of research in the meteorological community about this very topic. The answer isn't that simple, but we've found that it's dependent, of course, on temperature and geography of a sort. A general rule of thumb I use is 7:1 from above freezing to -2C...

    Storm Nils - France

For those unaware, the actual culprit is a low pressure system currently just south of Ireland. It is forecast to track just south of the UK and into the low countries, quite a distance from southern France where the isobars are packed tight bringing those stormy winds because of a trough...

    Waterspouts

As far as I am aware, the Fujita scale is only for land tornadoes, introduced by Ted Fujita back in the 60s or 70s. I actually prefer the UK based Torro scale which is scaled in wind speeds and not damage scale which is the Fujita model.

    European pattern shift

There does appear to be a ridge, bringing positive heights nudging into Iberia next week so we should be seeing a shift in the "storm track" to the north. The flooded folks of Spain and Portugal will be happy, but this will probably continue to bring bad weather to the UK and northwestern Europe.

Why is Portugal so wet this winter?

The jet stream, think of it as a path for the low pressure systems to follow and as a rule of thumb they are guided by this river of air way up in the troposphere but not always. This particularly jet stream in question is the polar jet which is primary driver of weather for our part of the...

Transition from Tropical to extratropical storm?

Not much more to add to that. They often tend to become a much larger entity, sometimes stretching out hundreds of miles and more.

    Netherlands temperature difference

Quite interesting as it's a shallow layer of sub zero temperatures near the surface. Looking at the radiosonde/skew t yesterday, it was a prime setup for ice accretion / freezing rain which may have surprised many in the region!

    Eastern Europe cold

Disrupted polar vortex, highly amplified upper level pattern............ Fascinating to watch this unfold from meteorological point of view, not so much for those without power trying to keep warm of course. It's rare we see the polar jet digging so far south. Look at the temperatures across...

    Wind directions obs confusing

Jerry is right about the answer. Don't feel silly about any questions. My philosophy is that the only silly question is the one that nobody asked. When I was in the navy learning met, I would sit there and not say anything, and often what was going on, because I wasn't getting what was being...

    La Nina to El Nino

Don't think we are done with La Nina quite yet looking at the latest sst charts. I do think however ENSO is shifting to a neutral phase. Maybe the switch is delayed longer than projected by NOAA?

    Weather stations

Thought I would start a thread for weather stations. Admin, is there a possibility this could be pinned? What weather station do you have? Questions and answers in this thread too? For starters, I have a cheap Bresser Clearview station. It does what it says, but I am not online yet. Maybe...

    Storm chasing ingredients

It's an interesting question. Not really my area of expertise, storm chasing was not a thing back in my day! But I will try my best, hopefully someone else can add to this. CAPE is usually the index most often used--but it must be used with care. There are many different kinds of...

Hello folks My name is Graham, I am a retired Royal Navy veteran, born and bred in Aberdeen, Scotland.
