Eastern Europe is experiencing severe winter conditions, with frigid Siberian and Arctic air dropping temperatures to between -15°C and -34°C in several regions, including the Baltic countries, Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus. These are well below average, likely 10 to 20C below average in some locations. Brutal for the people of Ukraine especially.

Warsaw reportedly dropped to almost -20C last night and Włodawa -23c.

Figured a thread should be started because this cold has been locked in over the region for weeks. Forecasts show the extreme cold retreating for a few days before another finger of frigid air pushes in from Russia and the sub arctic.

Disrupted polar vortex, highly amplified upper level pattern............ Fascinating to watch this unfold from meteorological point of view, not so much for those without power trying to keep warm of course.

It's rare we see the polar jet digging so far south. Look at the temperatures across Florida for example. Could be a cold February and even March for many, but western Europe remains at the mercy of the Atlantic, hence the sharp temperature contrast between west and east Europe as someone posted a few days ago.

The 2m temperature anomaly for the northern hemisphere. The cold pool over eastern European is very obvious.
