Iberian unsettled outlook

For those living on the Iberian peninsula and the western Med basin, the outlook is pretty grim. With a flood of cold air pouring out of Canada, the jetstream is particularly strong across the north Atlantic. Most of the numerical models show the mean flow diving down toward us, bringing low after low of unsettled weather. Not a good outlook for Spain, Portugal and northwestern Africa. It's an ominous setup for a potential DANA during the next 7 days, with all that goes with it - slow moving heavy convective rains, high winds potential.

We still have to deal with storm Ingrid which looks like bringing potential floods floods almost anywhere across Portugal and Spain tomorrow and Friday.

Will post updates on this.

A couple of squall lines being fed by a surface trough are moving through southern and central Portugal right now headed into Spain. They're packing quite a punch with some strong gusts and heavy rain. I've seen reports of hail near Porto measuring 3cm.

On Sunday, according to the Southeast Meteorological Network (AMETSE), gusts reached 180 km/h in Alcolea, Almeria southeast Spain.

5th named storm in just over a week. Now we have Kristin moving across Spain. We had Joseph yesterday and no one even realised.

This naming system is getting out of hand. Any wave/or low pressure system headed this way is now named?

Surely that defeats the purpose which is to name major weather events to grab the attention of the public. People are just paying zero attention when every piece of bad weathee is being named.

The problem is the naming system in Europe is not very unified. We have different met departments with different levels of criteria for naming a storm. It could do with some improvement. Chandra and Joseph are more or less the same low pressure system, and the weather effects over Iberia have been mostly from a very active frontal system as oppose to the actual low that hit the UK. The current synoptic pattern is a bit of a mess to read, very active!

More unwelcome rain on the way to the peninsular as I mentioned a few days ago. Fortunately it doesn't appear to be packing the moisture punch the previous couple of system have, however with a seriously saturated ground already, more rain is unwelcome.

Looks like Saturday being the wet day as the band of rain pushes east from the Atlantic. Locally of upto 100mm and unfortunately the modeling is suggesting the same regions as Leonardo being rained on most.
