Some interesting data from Meteo Greece. January figures show the month was warmer than average across the country and the islands.

New analysis from the Metro Gr Unit shows widespread positive temperature anomalies across Greece in January 2026, including more than two-thirds of the month above normal in Athens and Thessaloniki.

It will be interesting to see how Portugal and Spain report, gives a bigger picture of the Mediterranean situation. I suspect they will report below average as there were several extremely cold spells in southwest Europe.

January 2026: Warmer-than-Normal Conditions Across Greece
According to observations from the network of meteorological stations operated by the Meteo Gr Unit / National Observatory of Athens, January 2026 was warmer than average across all regions of Greece, compared to the 2010–2019 reference period.

📊 In terms of long-term ranking:
Northern Greece recorded its 7th warmest January since 2010.
Thessaly ranked 8th warmest, while Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Western Greece–Ionian ranked 6th warmest.
In Crete, the Aegean Islands and the Dodecanese, January 2026 was the 5th warmest January of the last 16 years.

🏙️ At city level, Athens recorded a mean maximum temperature anomaly of +1.2 °C, with 22 out of 31 days above normal, while Thessaloniki experienced 21 days above average, with a mean anomaly of +1.3 °C.
🌍 These findings highlight the value of continuous, long-term meteorological observations for monitoring temperature variability and emerging climate trends across Greece.
