Just some information on Kristin which hit parts of Portugal and Spain very hard on Wednesday morning...

176 kilometers (109 miles) per hour was recorded Wednesday morning at Monte Real Air Base in Leiria, a source from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
149 kilometres (93 miles) per hour recorded at Cabo Carvoeiro, Peniche, at 4 am.

Several other locations recorded 140 gusts.

It caused a number of deaths from flying debris.

The impact was wide, from Northern Morocco to southern France.

The highest wind gusts correlate with what looks like a sting jet in the satellite images. Quite unprecedented for Portugal.

A new Portugal wind record...

STORM KRISTIN - MONTE REAL (LEIRIA) IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN THE STORM'S LANDFALL. IPMA’S STATION IN SOURE RECORDED A 208.8 KM/H WIND GUST - NEW NATIONAL RECORD
IPMA records from yesterday Jan 28th, shows a gust of 208.8 km/h, at Soure station (Coimbra district) for now the new national record. There are still no data from IPMA’s stations in Leiria region.
Ex-Hurricane Leslie had until now produced the highest wind gust ever recorded in Portugal, according to data released by IPMA. The Figueira da Foz/Vila Verde weather station recorded a wind gust of approximately 176 km/h at 22:40 on October 13, 2018.
The previous record was from October 17, 2015, when a gust reached 169 km/h.
From the Leiria region exists, for now, the Air Force meteorological station data before being destroyed. During the briefing held at the headquarters of the ANEPC, yesterday Jan 28th, Nuno Lopes, from IPMA, explained that the Monte Real air base recorded a wind gust of 176 km/h at 05h00 and 178 km/h shortly afterwards."From then on, they stopped recording because the structure was destroyed," added Nuno Lopes, also stating that Monte Real was likely the entry point for this depression.
At the Cabo Carvoeiro station, a wind gust of 149 km/h was recorded, at the Ansião station a gust of 146 km/h was recorded, and in Leiria the speed reached 142 km/h.
The districts most affected by the depression were Leiria (where the storm made landfall in the mainland), Coimbra, Santarém, and Lisbon.

208km/h? That is is nuts for down there. Mind you given the right conditions there is a whole exposed coastline for a major storm?

Northwest Spain and Biscay is often prone to big wind and rain storms, but was obviously much more intense.
