    Iberian unsettled outlook

More unwelcome rain on the way to the peninsular as I mentioned a few days ago. Fortunately it doesn't appear to be packing the moisture punch the previous couple of system have, however with a seriously saturated ground already, more rain is unwelcome. Looks like Saturday being the wet day as...

    Thoughts on winter, so far....

Hi Henri Medium range forecasts, particularly the ECMWF are suggesting the NAO could switch to a positive pattern by mid-month. Curious to know your thoughts on this, as this would be a major shift in the weather for western Europe particularly as it would likely send us back to the tradition...

    Leonardo

There was a great example of orographic lift intensifying the rain around the Ronda region in southwest Spain earlier today. The band of precipitation sat there for hours dumping extreme rainfall rates of 100+mm per hour. The forecast modeling was very accurate for this event.

Transition from Tropical to extratropical storm?

I'm no expert on this, but here goes. A tropical storm or hurricane has a warm core. As you know, tropical storms need a source of warm SST`s among other ingredients. Take away those warm SST`s and the tropical storm loses it`s main source of fuel. Eventually it transitions to to extra...

    East Med storms

There's been some intense storms over parts of Greece yesterday, with the same frontal system now moving toward Turkey. A lot of lightning and heavy radar returns showing across coastal Turkey (Aegean), Izmir and down toward Marmaris. There was a number of tornadoes reported across southern...

    Nor'easter this weekend?

Latest prognostics show the bulk of the precipitation remaining offshore once the system begins to track up the eastern seaboard. Locations such as Halifax and St Johns likely to see most of the weather. Looks like the Carolinas picked up some high accumulations from this storm, close to 45cm...

    Nor'easter this weekend?

Looks like being very much a coastal event, it's possible Nova Scotia and parts of Newfoundland get quick dumping of snow and high winds.

    Iberian unsettled outlook

The problem is the naming system in Europe is not very unified. We have different met departments with different levels of criteria for naming a storm. It could do with some improvement. Chandra and Joseph are more or less the same low pressure system, and the weather effects over Iberia have...

    Potential cold end to January

Not so much, the true cold air remains over central and eastern Europe. There are hints in the longer range models of colder weather for northwestern Europe, but it's purely one model run. The modeled block over Scandinavia isn't positioned too well, and a flood of frigid air pouring out of...

    Winter storm (USA)

Latest update from WPC regarding the big winter storm about to hit central, southern and eastern USA. There is a whole bunch of watches and warnings across the east. It's primarily due to impact the States, less so for Canada. There is potential impact for Atlantic Canada early next week.

    Western Med flash flooding potential

Looks as though the upper level low slowly merges back into the mean flow by the end of the week, taking along the instability. Worst rainfall totals in coastal Tunisia for 70+ years. A number of deaths reported :(

    Western Med flash flooding potential

The Italians have issued a red weather alert for Siciliy, Corsica and the southern peninsula starting later today and ending later Wednesday. Some of the forecast models are suggesting 500mm+ in localised events. This could be historical and devastating rainfall amounts for the area.

    Florida temperature gradient

There's a huge temperature gradient across Florida at the moment, clearly defined by the passage of the cold front. At one time today, there was a 34c temperature different between the lowest and highest temperature across the state. Sub zero across the panhandle and temperatures in the upper...
